“Towering” success for GMG

Tower Printing is the first UK printer to invest in the GMG Production Suite wide-format colour management and workflow solution. The long-established South East London-based business signed the order this week at the Sign & Digital 2012.

The investment in GMG’s new all-in-one production solution, launched at Fespa Digital last month, is the latest step in Tower’s rapid recent expansion of its wide-format capability. “We seem to be adding a new machine almost every month,” says director Gavin Jones.  “We are looking at adding a second flat-bed printer shortly and it will join ten other machines: seven HP Designjet Z6100 and Z6200 models, two HP Designjet L25500s, and an Océ Arizona.”

Wide-format print currently accounts for 60% of Tower’s production, and is growing fast with clients that include Estée Lauder, Odeon Cinemas, The Old Vic, and the Bluewater shopping centre.  Products cover the spectrum of indoor and outdoor signage and display: POS displays, lightboxes, posters, hoardings, banners and flags.

To produce such a variety of applications, Tower’s wide-format printers use a combination of water-based, UV and latex inks on substrates that include banner stock, paper, cardboard, clear acrylic, PVC and self-adhesive vinyl.  “This is where GMG Production Suite comes in,” explains Gavin.  “The premium brands we work with demand consistent, comparable colour across multiple products and a real mix of media, in a host of formats for viewing at close quarters and long distance.  GMG Production Suite will deliver standardised colour across all our wide-format machines, both the current line-up and any future investments.  GMG has quickly become the de facto colour standard for wide-format work—nothing else we considered came close.”

He adds that a key USP of GMG Production Suite is the combination of consistent colour rendering with powerful workflow management.  “Its workflow tools will speed production significantly, giving us a further capacity boost from our existing kit.  We really like the EcoSave option, which lets us cut back on ink consumption without affecting colour quality and visual impact.  Based on our annual ink spend of around £35,000- £45,000, GMG Production Suite will pay for itself within 18 months.”

Simon Landau, GMG UK, says sealing the deal with Tower Printing “is a massive vote of confidence in GMG Production Suite, and confirms that the specification is exactly what the wide-format sector wants.  Tower’s blue-chip client list has stringent quality expectations, across a huge range of promotional products, and in significant volumes. GMG Production Suite takes the headache out of managing and delivering great quality graphics while increasing productivity and reducing costs.”

With Production Suite, GMG enters the wide-format sector with the market’s most complete solution for automated, standardised, colour-consistent production of indoor and outdoor advertising, sign and super wide-format printing.  It combines GMG’s renowned colour management technology with new job automation and file preparation capabilities in a single system for wide-format pre-press, print and finishing.  Target applications range from inkjet-based wide-format production of banners, POS material, displays and vehicle wraps, to industrial wide-format production in very large-format production environments, such as billboards, POS-material, large-format lettering.
