CSQ Uses HP Inkjet Web Press to Produce Special Edition Newspaper

HP has announced that Centro Stampa Quotidiani Spa (CSQ), of Erbusco in Lombardy, Northern Italy, used its HP T230 Color Inkjet Web Press to produce a special edition newspaper, La Gazette Paulette, for the Paris-based Paulette Magazine during the Cannes Film Festival.

La Gazette Paulette was produced every other day of the festival (15 -26 May) and distributed to visitors along the Boulevard de la Croisette and from other popular festival venues. La Gazette Paulette was printed in a four-page, 33.5 x 45cm, full-colour format on 52g/m2 improved newsprint and delivered the 433km (~270 miles) from Erbusco to Cannes by truck.

"The Paulette team required fast-turnarounds and consistent print quality to meet its goal of delivering the latest festival news and images," said Dario De Cian, managing director, CSQ. "The capabilities of our HP T230 Inkjet Press were well-suited to the task. During the festival, we produced six editions of 6,000 copies each. The Paulette team sent us PDF files before 4.00 p.m. and copies were delivered to Cannes the next morning before 8.30 a.m."

One of the reasons CSQ installed the HP T230 Color Inkjet Web Press was to be able to print cost-effective, short-run editions of foreign newspapers for the Mediterranean region. Since it was already delivering daily to Monaco and other points on the French Riviera it was easy to include copies of La Gazette Paulette in the shipment.

Paulette Magazine is a 100 per cent participative journal dedicated to women's interests and issues. Established in 2010 by Irène Olczak as an online publication, it later introduced a hard copy version that now has a circulation of 35,000 copies. "We wanted to do something special for this year's film festival, and were looking for a viable means of delivering news and engaging with women at the festival," said Irène Olczak, founder, Paulette Magazine. "HP's long association with the Cannes Film Festival gave them an understanding of the event and they were able to arrange a timely and effective production solution with CSQ."

Publishing La Gazette Paulette took a lot of preparation with some stories written in advance. Then, a team of four (two photographers, the art director and a journalist) set up on-site in Cannes, supported by five more in the Paris office. Each day the team arranged interviews, viewed films and captured the nightlife during the festival to create fresh copy for the newspaper. "It was an interesting challenge and I think it worked well," said Irène Olczak. "The readers in Cannes weren't the same as those who read Paulette Magazine, so we adapted our content.  I think we kept the spirit of Paulette and the readers liked it. The printing, production and delivery side went very smoothly, so all we had to concentrate on was having the layouts ready on time."

The HP T230 Color Inkjet Web Press has a web width up to 558mm and a print width up to 520mm and can print at speeds up to 122m/min. "The production of La Gazette Paulette demonstrates how creative publishers can develop new, relevant products that have genuine immediacy and are cost-effective, too," said Paul Randall, EMEA market development manager, direct marketing, transactional and publishing segment, HP. "The versatility of the HP T-series inkjet web presses and new economic models have the potential to transform market sectors. La Gazette Paulette is one example of how this can be done."
